Plumbing, part three: It’s done!

Thursday, September 28th, 2006 by The Gimlet

(Editor’s Note: Just as Gaul was divided so neatly into three parts, so was The Gimlet’s successful foray into plumbing. Veni, vidi, Vanguard!)

Click to view all the plumbing images. The plumbing has been completed. The final switch over took about seven hours. In the morning I hung the ¾” tubing between where the water supply comes into the house and the Manabloc. I then put the pex tubing and flex copper tubing in place for the water heater. It was now time to shut off the water and make the switch. I cut the galvanized pipe over the shut off valve and then used a couple of pipe wrenches to remove the pipe from the valve. After a little bit of Teflon tape and putting in a pex adapter I was ready to crimp some pex rings.

There was one moment of panic when, after attaching the water heater to the Manabloc and turning on the water, the tubing into the Manabloc popped off. (more…)

The Music Genome Project

Thursday, September 28th, 2006 by HML

Thanks to Kelley for mentioning Pandora, a nifty site that broadens the musical horizons. A group of musicians and technologists analyzed over 10,000 different artists, coming up with what they call the “genes” of music — melody, harmony, and rhythm come readily to mind — as well as other terms (meandering melodic phrasing, orchestral arranging, and wet/dry recording sound, to name a few).

Here’s how it works: you enter a name of a song or artist, and Pandora generates a playlist (“station”) of similar music. As you rate their choices (thumbs up or down), Pandora’s selections change accordingly. If you’re curious why Pandora chose a particular tune, you can see its “genetic” breakdown.

I entered the band Intuition first, which Pandora didn’t know, and then tried Neuroactive, which yielded better results. Since I was just trying things out, Pandora created a small Neuroactive station consisting of about eight different songs, and I liked about half of their choices. It was an easy, interesting way to break out of listening to the usual favorites again. I’ll be spending more time noodling around their site to see what their stations can put together.

LA Femme results

The results are in, and NR wasn’t selected. It’s disappointing, but as its topic is so different from the rest of the screenplays, it just wasn’t the sort of story this year’s judges were looking for.

This is getting to be a bad habit

Hey, we’re back online! Again!

Earlier this month, Stumbling Fool’s ISP was acquired by a new ISP, who cut off service to their new “customers.” Since then, we’ve been working with Stumbling Fool to retrieve our data and move to a new home on my main site, Solitary Elegance. The move is half-way complete; we’re still working on transferring the Gallery images (Even though the image boxes say you can click to see more images, don’t believe everything you read.).

Meanwhile, update your bookmarks. It’s good to be back.

2 October ETA: The Gallery images have been restored. Hooray!

Starting middle school

Monday, September 11th, 2006 by Thing One

This week was my first week of middle school. Instead of having one teacher, I have to go around the school for different classes. I have homeroom, where we read, then I have World Languages. In World Languages I will get to try out Spanish, French, and Japanese. Then I go to Math, Social Studies, and lunch. During the lunch break, there is a game room where you can eat lunch. There is a ping pong table, tubs of legos, board games and card decks. Then, after the lunch break, I go to Junior Orchestra, where we learn how to play music for concerts during the school year. I play the cello. After that is Language Arts. The Language Arts room has a corn snake. Then, I go to science, where we learn about gasses and chemicals. Then I go to my locker, get my backpack and go home.

I would like to know what my cousins are doing in their schools, and how they like their classes. They can write back to me in the Comments!

Click to see pictures of both Things at the same age.Thing One took a few pictures of Thing Two this morning, and for fun we compared pictures of both guys at the same age … and wearing pretty much the same clothes. In the gallery there’s a set of pictures of both boys, side-by-side. Those who used to keep up with our baby blog-type site from ten years ago may remember the photos of Thing One.

PS: Those eyes haven’t been Photoshopped, BTW. Watch your back, Laser Beam Boy.
