Happy Birthday

by HML

Last Sunday was the Things’ great-grandmother’s 90th birthday, a milestone worth celebrating with the best food, drink, and company.  Thing Two and Your Humble Narrator spent Saturday shopping for ingredients for our contribution:  Dungeness crab cakes topped with roasted pepper-chive aioli.

Snow in March?

Sunday morning was snowy, but the snow soon changed to rain and we were on our way.

Yummy!

This magnificent smorgasbord awaited us at the end of our stormy drive. Bestemor got a little carried away with the party spirit and made 90 each of her open-face sandwiches and quiche muffins, so multiple plate refills were encouraged.

Uncle B and soon-to-be Aunt H

Uncle B brought his fiancee, Hillary, to meet the family.  The wedding date is at the end of May, and they will be getting married in Seattle.

Three little maids from school

Including the guest of honor, four nonagenarians attended the party!  Here are three (L-R):   the Things’ great-grandmother, her sister, and her best friend.  They’ve been friends for 86 years.

What's a party without dancing? Things in their best party clothes

At the other end of the age spectrum, Uncle B busts a move, and here are the Things, dressed in their best clothes for the occasion.  This wasn’t a children’s party (the Things were the only kids there) but they were very well behaved.  Thing Two discovered the cherry tomatoes and fancy toothpicks, which kept him occupied until it was time for cake.

Two kinds of cake: she's entitled

Thing Two can’t be seen in this photo but he helped Great-Grandma blow out her candles.

Happy Birthday Mom

Time for photo ops:  first, the children …

Happy Birthday Grandma

… and then almost all the grandchildren (Uncle Q wasn’t able to come) and two of her six great-grandchildren.

We all had so much fun that the pressure is now on Bopa to reach the same milestone, and a 100th birthday celebration has a nice ring to it, too …

Still enjoying the leftovers

One last look at the smorgasbord, because it was that tasty.
