A room of one’s own

Cross-posted from Sinister Craftiness, because it counts as a remodeling project.

There is an unexpected benefit to having newlyweds in the family who live nearby:  they need stuff, and we just happened to have a spare room full of furniture and other items that we just don’t need any more.  When they got back from their honeymoon, they pretty much cleared out the spare room, leaving me with … (more…)

2009 Fathers and Sons Outing

Thing One:

On June 5-6, I went with Thing Two and my dad to Ensign ranch in the Cascades near Cle Elum for the Fathers and Sons Outing. First, we went into the main rec room and played ping-pong, pool, shuffle boarding, and foosball.

Then, the burgers and hot dogs were ready, so everybody ate dinner. Then, we went to the campfire, sang songs from the Gimlet’s WoodBadge songbook, and then a story was told.

The question (like it is every year) is “True or made up?” I thought that this story, like other stories had both true parts and fake parts. Then, we roasted smores, and went to bed, since by that time it was 10:00 pm.

The next morning, after breakfast, we packed up, and then I went to the lake to ride a canoe, while Thing Two and my dad went to the horses so Thing Two could do a led ride.

He got to ride Micah, the same horse he rode last year.  I would have done a ride too, but there was no opening at the times I could have gone. I went canoeing on the lake then, and then my dad, brother and I went home.

The Gimlet:

At bed time, Thing Two decided the room was too dark.  We were sharing a cabin with a father and two boys, each one year older than Thing One and Thing Two respectively.  The boy just older than Thing Two also thought it was too dark and wanted his headlamp.  Both I and the other father attempted to calm our sons.  I ultimately gave a flashlight to Thing Two who turned it on.  The other boy said, “It’s too bright to go to sleep.”  Finally, I pulled my bed next to Thing Two’s and held his hand… he turned off the flash light.  Then every 15 to 30 seconds Thing Two or the other 4 year old would break the silence with some observation.  We finally all fell asleep.

The next day, Thing One went canoeing with a family friend that was Scoutmaster many years previously to the Gimlet. (Currently committee chair.) He was a patient teacher.  Thing Two was nervous about the water, but ultimately decided that he wanted to go canoeing.  Fun was had by all.

“The bells rang, and every body smiled”

All these pictures and more can be found in the Gimlet Gallery.

Uncle B and Hillary (we’re going to have to do something to differentiate between the Aunt H in Texas and our new Aunt H) were married May 30 in the Seattle LDS Temple.  The sun was out, the rhododendrons were still in bloom, and although there are technically no bells to ring at the temple, every body was smiling.

Introducing the bride and groom!  A little later, Uncle B takes time to pose with his biggest fan, five year-old niece Gabby.

Obligatory beauty shot in front of the temple, and during all the picture-taking, Thing Two and his Bopa decided it was time to take a walk in the shade.

The parents of the bride and groom express their enthusiasm over seeing their children finally married.

After lunch at Maggiano’s, we enjoyed a brief break before the reception at the Space Needle.

The sky was clear, making the evening one of the rare occasions when you really get your money’s worth out of the elevator ride to the top.

The newlyweds spent the next week at a beach house near Tofino, British Columbia, and are now settling into their new home.  Congratulations and welcome to the family!
