Island time Friday

by HML

Autumn sunshine.  A Friday off from school.  We needed no further enticement to spend the afternoon on Whidbey Island.

After a short ferry ride and drive we stopped in Coupeville to explore the waterfront, pay a visit to Rosie, the gray whale skeleton at the wharf, and enjoy an ice cream break.

We hear Kapaws Iskreme is incredibly crowded in the summer; even after the tourist season has ended there was a steady stream of customers.  With a tempting array of choices before us, we ought to be ashamed to admit that we all chose different types of chocolate, but they were all so tasty that we have no regrets.  We’ll branch out next time.  Maybe.

Then it was on to Ebey’s Landing.  There’s a nice hike along the bluff which offers spectacular views of Admiralty Inlet, but today we just felt like walking along the beach, throwing rocks into the water, and playing with sticks.

Many people have built forts out of driftwood, which were fun to play in (and get out of the wind for a little while).

The sun was shining but it was cold at the beach.  Even Thing One wore a coat!   Thing Two has been wary of ocean waves and tides ever since his visit to Copalis Beach, but the inlet was so gentle that by the end of our walk, he was willing to cross the driftwood line and walk along the shore.  He kept warning Thing One not to get too close to the water, though.

When we were done playing on the beach, we drove back to the ferry, enjoying the scenery and stopping along the way whenever something caught our interest, like this blockhouse on the road to Fort Casey.  Whidbey Island is one of our favorite day-tripping destinations; the perfect, easy-to-reach solution whenever we need some island time to balance out a busy week.
