A few more pre-Jamboree photos

by HML

Thing One’s troop arrived at the Jamboree on Monday, and after setting up camp they have been exploring all the activities, exhibits, and other fun the Jamboree has to offer.  Before the Jamboree, the scouts enjoyed four days around Washington, D.C., touring several monuments and historic sites.  Again, many thanks to the scoutmasters, troop historian, and webmaster of Troop 749 for sharing their photos and stories.

On their first day in DC, the troop had tickets to go to the top of the Washington Monument and toured the Capitol Building and National Archives.  With an attorney as scoutmaster, a troop photo at the Supreme Court was in order.  A special Marine Barracks parade that evening was a grand end to the day.

The next day was divided between Mount Vernon and the King’s Dominion Water Park (a welcome break from the heat and humidity).

Saturday attractions included Ford’s Theatre, a photo stop at the Boy Scout National Memorial, FDR and Jefferson memorials, and an afternoon exploring the Smithsonian.  We now have photographic proof that Thing One has been souvenir shopping, as if his depleted bank balance were not enough evidence.  We know he bought some sort of sword at Gettysburg and can’t wait to see what else he chose.

Sunday services were held at the stake center adjacent to the Washington Temple, with a special priesthood meeting for the scouts at the temple visitors’ center.

After church, the scouts toured Arlington National Cemetery and watched the changing of the guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.

A heavy thunderstorm at the Iwo Jima Memorial provided some cooling off time before viewing the Vietnam Memorial, Lincoln Memorial, and Korean War Memorial.  A second visit to the Smithsonian finished out the troop’s grand tour of the nation’s capitol.

Lest you fear that Thing One’s tour has been nothing but boring group photos, here’s a teaser from the many silly photos the troop has shared.  The scouts are having a lot of fun and making memories which will last a lifetime.
