Thing One’s Report: Orchestra Symposium

Saturday, November 4th, 2006 by Thing One

Editor’s note: Ten middle school orchestras from around the region and three adjudicators met at Thing One’s school Saturday morning to perform and attend a workshop.

Click to see more images from the orchestra symposium. At the orchestra symposium, we played pieces by Antonio Vivaldi. He lived in the baroque period (around the 1700s). There were three movements but we only performed I and III. The orchestra teacher has two violin baroque bows and is going to buy some baroque cello bows. I play the cello and including me, there are five cellists in the junior orchestra. The junior orchestra also has two violas, two basses, and lots of violinists. At the summer music program, we played down in front of the stage, so this was my first time on the stage and it felt different. Also, there were orchestras from lots of other middle schools. The movements were fun to play and I enjoyed doing them. :)

Starting middle school

Monday, September 11th, 2006 by Thing One

This week was my first week of middle school. Instead of having one teacher, I have to go around the school for different classes. I have homeroom, where we read, then I have World Languages. In World Languages I will get to try out Spanish, French, and Japanese. Then I go to Math, Social Studies, and lunch. During the lunch break, there is a game room where you can eat lunch. There is a ping pong table, tubs of legos, board games and card decks. Then, after the lunch break, I go to Junior Orchestra, where we learn how to play music for concerts during the school year. I play the cello. After that is Language Arts. The Language Arts room has a corn snake. Then, I go to science, where we learn about gasses and chemicals. Then I go to my locker, get my backpack and go home.

I would like to know what my cousins are doing in their schools, and how they like their classes. They can write back to me in the Comments!

Orchestra Camp: Thing One’s report

Tuesday, August 8th, 2006 by Thing One

Editor’s Note: Thing One recently completed three weeks of orchestra camp, organized by the school district and held at Thing One’s middle school.

Cello practiceI play the cello; there were 2 other cellos, and 6 violins. On Thursday on week 3, there was a concert. The songs the orchestra played were Fiddlin’ to Boston, Rigadoon, New World Symphony Theme and Rockin’ Strings. On Fridays, we played games. In Friday #1, we played kickball, we played soccer ball on Friday #2 and field day on Friday #3, we had Field day. My favorite game was tug o’ war. The boys won best out of 3. (boys:2\3) and also on Friday 3, we had a pizza feed. I had one kind of each (pepperoni, cheese and meat) and Sprite (opposed to Coke). And we watched movies. First week, Robots, second week, Valiant and third week, The Gods Must be Crazy. Friday #3 was extended to 12:30 for the pizza feed. I liked the summer music program and it’s grades 4-8 so I can do it again. I really liked Field Day the best and Rockin’ Strings was the most fun to play.

There’s always room for cello

Thursday, June 8th, 2006 by HML

The string sectionThe school year is drawing to a close, and that means it’s time to attend an elementary school orchestra/band concert. When Thing One started taking lessons last year, we were doubtful that the kids would be ready to perform come June, but the teacher makes the most out of the weekly lessons! The band and orchestra play a winter and summer concert each year.

This year’s summer concert was also good. Thing One is one of three cellists. He did a great job and we’re very proud of him for sticking with his practicing! He will join the middle school’s junior orchestra in the fall.
