Introducing Beast One and Beast Two

Thursday, October 16th, 2008 by HML

After a few delays due to travel and illness, GimletBlog HQ just became a lot cuter, fluffier, and friskier:  the kittens are here!  Of course they have their own Gimlet Gallery album where they can be admired while eating, sleeping, and engaging in all other exciting kitten pursuits.

NanaimoHere’s Beast One, also known as Nanaimo.  He was named as much for the Vancouver Island town as for the chocolate-vanilla dessert.  Nanaimo is already a big boy (we love his lionlike ruff) and judging from his oversized paws, will grow up to be big and fluffy like his daddy, Gus.  The Things have a castle play set which Nanaimo has already claimed as a favorite napping and play spot.

ChinookBeast Two is named Chinook, like the king salmon.  Chinook has been the more adventuresome of the pair:  he was the first to explore the house, and quickly claimed the top of the kitty tree as his special napping spot.  He has beautiful deep blue eyes and a similar sweet expression to his mom, Emma Rose.

We're going to need a larger kibble dispenserThey’re settling in very well:  playing with us and each other, purring and snuggling, and eating like little horses.   And now, if you’ll excuse us, it’s time to go back to playing with the kittens.

… and a small summer project

Note the brand name of the pet doorBefore the windows were replaced and before our summer vacation, the Gimlet spent about an hour making some changes to the laundry room door and the basement door.  What could those changes be?  Can it be possible?  Yes!  Team Gimlet is preparing (some more enthusiastically than others) to welcome two Ragdoll kittens to our family!

After deciding that the Ragdoll breed’s handsome appearance and mellow temperament would be a good fit for us, we found Cashmere Rags, a small cattery near Snohomish.  When we visited, we were won over by the incredibly clean facilities, owner Lorna’s friendly and professional approach, and (of course) the cats and kittens we met.  As one litter had just been born and another was due soon after our visit, we made plans to return six weeks later and choose our kittens:

Seal mitt boyThis male kitten is a seal mitt, which means that his markings are similar to a Siamese Seal Point, plus he has a white front, chin, and paws.  He was a little shy at first, but was curious about us and began to play with the Things in no time.  He comes from the older litter and his parents are Gus and Truffles.

Seal point boyThe Gimlet was the first to notice this kitten’s stunning deep blue eyes.  (Like Siamese, Ragdoll eyes stay blue.)  Although he’s younger than the seal mitt, this seal point already has beautiful markings.  His parents are Stetson and Emma Rose.  Emma bestowed her maternal endorsement upon The Gimlet, first by sticking her face in his shoes, then enthusiastically rubbing his feet.  Apparently his toes are catnip-scented.

The kittens will be grown up enough to join our home in mid to late September.  Meanwhile, we get our kitty fix by looking at the photos on Cashmere Rags’ kitten page, and if that’s not enough, Cashmere Rags’ photographer Chris has his own gallery.  To learn more about the Ragdoll breed, visit Ragdoll Fanciers Club International, Ragdoll International, or Ragdoll Fanciers Worldwide.

Bête Noire

The doubtful guestDuring GimletBlog’s unexpected holiday, a kitten was abandoned near the grandparents’ house. The veterinarian gave her a clean bill of health, nobody in the neighborhood was missing a kitten and they decided to keep her. However, since they had already made vacation plans, we offered to watch her for the week. She’s “a little black nothing of feet and fur” with green eyes and thirteen toes on her front paws (7 and 6, respectively).

We discovered that babies are very much alike, whether human or animal. They were attracted to each other’s toys, competed for attention, and the house was almost too cute (and messy) for the week. The kitten took great delight in stalking and pouncing on Thing Two, who was less than thrilled with this game.

It looks as though she will be called Persephone, a suitable name for a 13-toed black cat who arrived on one of the hottest days of the year as if from the Underworld. But if Thing Two’s French were up to speed, I think he would name her Bêttie.
